Fans unveil Rebel City display

On this day in Nottingham Forest history in 2019 supporter group Forza Garibaldi celebrated Nottingham’s Rebel City identity before the Derby match.

Culture and identity

Cultural moment that defines club identity

Forza Garibaldi, the Nottingham Forest supporter group known for organising fan displays, flags and atmosphere at the City Ground, unveiled its Rebel City display before the East Midlands derby against Derby County.

The display celebrated Nottingham’s radical and cultural identity, linking the football club’s matchday atmosphere with wider city history. It featured figures associated with Nottingham and rebellion, creativity or social change, including Brian Clough, Alan Sillitoe, D. H. Lawrence, Ned Ludd, Helen Watts and Eric Irons.

The timing gave the display extra impact, as it appeared before a derby that Forest won 1–0 through Yohan Benalouane’s early goal. The defender struck inside the opening minutes, giving Forest a lead they held for the rest of the night.. Forza Garibaldi’s work helped turn the night into more than just a football fixture, connecting supporter culture, local pride and derby-day theatre in one of the group’s most memorable City Ground displays.
