Nottingham Forest ended Mark Warburton’s spell as manager after nine months, cutting short a reign that had started with survival but ended in another sharp change of direction.

The decision came less than 24 hours after a 1–0 home defeat to Sunderland, a damaging result against a side near the bottom of the Championship. Forest were 14th, had lost five of their previous seven league games, and the early-season optimism around the new ownership had started to fade.

Warburton had kept Forest up on the final day of the previous season, but the new campaign had become uneven. Reports at the time pointed to poor defensive numbers, too many defeats, and a growing difference of opinion between the manager and the owners over the direction of the club, with the January transfer window about to open.

David Weir and Frank McParland also left, making it more than a simple change in the dugout. Gary Brazil was placed in caretaker charge before Aitor Karanka arrived in January.

For supporters, the timing gave the news a familiar sting. New Year’s Eve should have been a moment to look ahead, but Forest were once again starting a new year by searching for another way forward.
