Victory over Sheff Utd boosts title chase
On this day in 1966 Forest beat Sheffield United 3–1 to go third during the club’s First Division runner-up season.
Nottingham Forest ended 1966 by climbing to third in the First Division with a 3–1 win over Sheffield United at the City Ground.
Johnny Carey’s side were in the middle of one of the club’s finest league campaigns, and this result kept them right in the title race. Frank Wignall opened the scoring in the 39th minute before Joe Baker and Ian Storey-Moore added further goals after the break.
Those names captured the attacking strength Forest had that season. Baker brought proven finishing, Storey-Moore carried flair and threat, and Wignall’s contribution helped make the afternoon more comfortable after half-time.
Forest eventually finished as First Division runners-up in 1966–67, behind Manchester United. The Sheffield United win was not the defining match of the campaign, but it belonged to the steady run of results that made Forest genuine title challengers rather than distant outsiders.
