Britt Assombalonga’s move to Middlesbrough marked one of Nottingham Forest’s major outgoing transfers of the modern Championship years.

Forest sold the striker after Middlesbrough met the release clause in his contract. Assombalonga had been one of the club’s most dangerous forwards, scoring 30 goals in 47 league starts after joining Forest in 2014.

At the time the move also reflected the financial realities of the Championship. Forest were not in a position to simply ignore a major bid, even for a player whose goals had often carried clear attacking value.

For fans, the sale brought frustration as well as understanding. Assombalonga had given Forest pace, strength and finishing power, and losing him to a divisional rival underlined how hard it was to build lasting momentum outside the Premier League.
