Taylor reunites with Clough
On this day in Nottingham Forest history in 1976 Peter Taylor joins Brian Clough at Forest.
Peter Taylor’s arrival at Nottingham Forest reunited one of English football’s most influential managerial partnerships.
Brian Clough had already been in charge at the City Ground, but Taylor’s return to his side changed the shape of what Forest could become. Their partnership had already shown its strength at Derby County, built on Clough’s authority and Taylor’s judgement of players.
At Forest, that blend became even more powerful. Taylor’s eye for recruitment and dressing-room fit helped turn a Second Division club into English champions and then European champions.
The results came quickly. Forest won promotion in 1976-77, became First Division champions in 1977-78, lifted the League Cup twice, and then won back-to-back European Cups in 1979 and 1980.
For supporters, this was not just an assistant-manager appointment. It was the moment the partnership that would define Forest’s greatest era came back together, with consequences that soon reached far beyond Nottingham.
