McGugan thunderbolt in Bolton draw
On this day in Nottingham Forest history in 2012 Lewis McGugan scores a 30-yard thunderbolt as Forest draw at Bolton Wanderers.
Lewis McGugan produced one of his trademark long-range strikes in Forest’s 2-2 Championship draw away to Bolton Wanderers.
The match at the Reebok Stadium was still in its early stages when McGugan gave Forest the lead. Dexter Blackstock dropped deep and helped the move on, allowing McGugan to step inside and open up the shooting angle.
From around 30 yards, he struck the ball fiercely into the top corner, giving Adam Bogdan no chance. It was the kind of goal McGugan was capable of at his best: clean, powerful and spectacular from distance.
Bolton later turned the game around, but Forest responded through Andy Reid to earn a point. The match finished 2-2, with McGugan’s strike remaining the moment that defined it from a Forest perspective.
For supporters, the goal fitted McGugan’s reputation. He could frustrate at times, but he also had the technique and confidence to produce finishes that stayed in the memory long after the result itself had settled.
