Collymore debut at Palace
On this day in Nottingham Forest history in 1993 Stan Collymore makes his Forest league debut away to Crystal Palace.
Stan Collymore’s Forest league debut came in a 2-0 First Division defeat away to Crystal Palace.
The result itself was disappointing. Forest had come down from the Premier League at the end of Brian Clough’s final season, and the early weeks of 1993-94 were about finding direction under Frank Clark.
Collymore had arrived from Southend United for an initial £2.25m fee and a growing reputation. His first league appearance did not bring a goal or a positive result, but it was the start of one of the most explosive short spells in the club’s modern history.
Forest lost at Selhurst Park, yet Collymore soon became central to the promotion campaign. His pace, strength and finishing gave the side a forward who could change matches almost by himself.
By the end of the season, he had scored 19 league goals as Forest won promotion through the play-offs. The Palace debut was a quiet beginning, but what followed made it look like the first step in a remarkable Forest year.
