Win over Stockport aids promotion push
On this day in 1997 Forest beat Stockport County at the City Ground during the promotion season.
Nottingham Forest came from behind to beat Stockport County 2-1 at the City Ground during a promotion season that demanded consistency.
Dave Bassett’s side were chasing an immediate return to the Premier League, but Stockport made the afternoon awkward by taking a 1-0 lead through Alun Armstrong after 14 minutes. Forest were still behind at half-time, so the result had to be rescued late.
Pierre van Hooijdonk brought Forest level from the penalty spot in the 81st minute, and Steve Stone completed the turnaround four minutes later. Those two late goals turned a frustrating home match into another useful result added to the promotion column.
The wider meaning came later. Forest finished the 1997-98 season as First Division champions and went straight back up. In that context, the Stockport win sits as one of those December league results that helped keep the title push on course.
