Ponte, Walsh & Francis sink Sunderland
On this day in 1980 Forest beat Sunderland 3–1 with Ponte, Walsh and Francis goals at the City Ground.
Nottingham Forest gave the City Ground a strong First Division afternoon by beating Sunderland 3-1 while still carrying the status of reigning European champions.
Brian Clough’s side had lifted the European Cup for the second year in a row only months earlier, beating Hamburg in Madrid in May 1980. Against Sunderland, they struck at useful moments: Raimondo Ponte put Forest ahead after 15 minutes, Colin Walsh added a second before half-time, and Trevor Francis made it 3-0 early in the second half.
The scorers gave the match a good spread of Forest attacking quality. Ponte’s goal gave the home side the lead, Walsh’s finish strengthened that advantage, and Francis’s strike after the interval left Sunderland with too much to recover.
Forest finished the 1980-81 season seventh in the First Division, just missing out on UEFA Cup qualification on goal difference. In that setting, the Sunderland win stands as a solid league performance from a side still close to its European Cup peak, but beginning to move beyond the club’s greatest trophy-winning years.
