Crossley penalty heroics beat Spurs
On this day in 1996 Crossley helps Forest beat Spurs on penalties in the FA Cup.
Mark Crossley helped Nottingham Forest through an FA Cup shootout at White Hart Lane after a 1-1 draw with Tottenham Hotspur.
Bryan Roy scored for Forest in the fifth-round replay, but Teddy Sheringham equalised for Spurs and the tie eventually had to be settled on penalties. Away from home, with the cup tie still alive, the shootout turned the goalkeeper into the central figure.
Crossley’s role gave the night its identity. Forest won the shootout 3-1, with Crossley saving three Tottenham penalties to turn a difficult away replay into one of the club’s more dramatic cup moments of the 1990s.
The result sent Forest through in the FA Cup and added another memorable entry to Crossley’s reputation at the club. A 1-1 draw on the night became something more lasting because of what happened from the spot.
