Lyon draw seals UEFA Cup progress
On this day in 1995 Forest hold Lyon 0-0 away to reach the UEFA Cup quarter-finals 1-0 on aggregate.
Nottingham Forest reached the UEFA Cup quarter-finals by holding Lyon to a 0-0 draw at the Stade de Gerland.
Frank Clark’s side travelled to France with a 1-0 lead from the first leg at the City Ground, so the job was clear: protect the advantage and make Lyon find a way through. Mark Crossley kept a clean sheet, Stuart Pearce captained the side, and Forest’s defence did enough over the night to turn that narrow first-leg lead into a European away result.
The scoreline meant Forest went through 1-0 on aggregate. It was not a night remembered for goals, but for the control and resilience needed to finish the tie away from home against serious French opposition.
Bayern Munich waited in the quarter-finals, giving the run an even bigger stage. Forest were beaten 7-2 on aggregate in that tie, but the Lyon result still mattered because it put the club back among major European opposition in the mid-1990s.
