Keane double routs champions Leeds
On this day in Nottingham Forest history in 1992 Roy Keane scores twice as Forest beat defending champions Leeds United 4-1 at Elland Road.
Nottingham Forest produced one of the shock results of the early Premier League era by beating defending champions Leeds United 4-1 at Elland Road.
Brian Clough’s side were struggling badly, but they struck with real force. Nigel Clough opened the scoring in the 27th minute from a Stuart Pearce assist. Roy Keane then scored twice in the second half, both times after Neil Webb had supplied him, while Kingsley Black added another goal from a Scot Gemmill assist.
Leeds were still carrying the status of champions, while Forest were trying to fight their way off the bottom. That contrast made the scoreline stand out. Gary Speed’s late goal only reduced the margin, and the afternoon belonged to Forest’s attacking burst and Keane’s midfield drive.
The win did not change the final direction of the season, as Forest were eventually relegated from the Premier League. Even so, the 4-1 victory at Elland Road remains a vivid reminder that Clough’s final side could still produce a result with real bite.
