Stone sinks Auxerre in UEFA Cup
On this day in 1995 Forest beat Auxerre 1–0 away in the UEFA Cup second round first leg.
Forest earned an important European away result by beating Auxerre 1–0 in France in the UEFA Cup second round first leg.
Frank Clark’s side travelled to Stade de l’Abbé-Deschamps knowing that a controlled away performance could give them a serious platform in the tie. Auxerre were a respected French side under Guy Roux, so the match carried the feel of a proper European test rather than a routine midweek fixture.
Steve Stone scored the only goal after 23 minutes, giving Forest a precious lead to protect. With Stuart Pearce, Colin Cooper and Steve Chettle in the side, Forest left France with the kind of away win that can define a two-legged European tie.
The second leg at the City Ground finished 0–0, which was enough for Forest to progress 1–0 on aggregate. For supporters, the Auxerre win remained a reminder of Frank Clark’s side carrying the club back into Europe with discipline and belief.
