Nottingham Forest kept their European campaign alive by beating Malmö FF 1-0 at the City Ground and progressing on away goals in the UEFA Cup.

Forest had lost the first leg 2-1 in Sweden, where Ian Woan’s away goal kept the tie within reach. Back in Nottingham, Bryan Roy scored the decisive goal, running onto the ball on the right side of the penalty area before lifting a composed finish over the advancing goalkeeper and into the net. The goal turned the aggregate score to 2-2 and sent Forest through because of that earlier away strike.

The Malmö name carried history for Forest supporters because the clubs had met in the 1979 European Cup final, when Forest won the trophy in Munich. This was a very different era, but it still gave the night an obvious European echo.

Frank Clark’s side went on to make a strong run in the competition, eventually reaching the UEFA Cup quarter-finals before being knocked out by Bayern Munich. The Malmö result was the first step in that last major European adventure of the 1990s.
