Man City draw forces cup replay
On this day in 1993 Forest draw 0-0 with Manchester City to force a League Cup fourth-round replay.
Nottingham Forest’s League Cup fourth-round tie with Manchester City ended goalless at the City Ground, but the 0-0 draw kept the cup run alive.
Frank Clark’s side were chasing promotion after relegation from the Premier League, while Manchester City arrived as the top-flight team. Mark Crossley kept a clean sheet, with Stuart Pearce, Steve Chettle and Colin Cooper part of a Forest side that did enough to earn a replay.
That replay became the real story of the tie. Forest went to Maine Road and won 2-1, with Neil Webb and Colin Cooper scoring late goals to send Clark’s side through to the League Cup quarter-finals.
The result fitted neatly into a season of recovery. Forest were building momentum in the league, but this cup win also showed they could still trouble Premier League opposition on their way back up.
