Sheringham sinks Liverpool in TV first
On this day in 1992 Forest beat Liverpool in the first live televised Premier League match.
Nottingham Forest beat Liverpool 1-0 at the City Ground in the first live televised Premier League match.
The fixture carried a place in television history as well as football history. Sky’s live coverage marked the beginning of a new era for the English top flight, but inside the ground it was still a league match against Liverpool that Forest wanted to win.
Teddy Sheringham scored the only goal in the first half. Cutting inside from the left, he finished superbly into the top corner, giving Forest the breakthrough and creating the first goal shown live on Sky in the Premier League era.
The result gave Brian Clough’s side a winning start against one of English football’s biggest clubs. It also briefly placed Sheringham at the centre of the new league’s opening weekend story.
His Forest spell was almost over. Sheringham soon moved to Tottenham Hotspur and finished the season as the Premier League’s top scorer. For Forest, the win remained a famous opening snapshot of the Premier League era: Liverpool beaten, the cameras watching, and Sheringham providing the first decisive image.
