Victory at Villa fuels Wembley run
On this day in Nottingham Forest history in 1991 Stuart Pearce and Ian Woan score as Forest win 2–0 at Aston Villa in the Zenith Data Systems Cup.
Nottingham Forest moved into the next round of the Zenith Data Systems Cup with a 2–0 win over Aston Villa at Villa Park.
Brian Clough’s side struck either side of half-time in the Northern third round tie. Stuart Pearce put Forest ahead in the 39th minute, and Ian Woan made it 2–0 in the 54th minute to give Forest a strong away win against First Division opposition.
The win became more significant as Forest’s run gathered pace. Clough’s side went on to reach Wembley, where they beat Southampton 3–2 after extra time to lift the Zenith Data Systems Cup.
For Forest, it was a clean, useful away result in a season that ended with more silverware. Pearce and Woan supplied the goals, Villa were beaten on their own ground, and another Wembley run stayed alive.
