Manager Allan Brown arrives from Bury
On this day in Nottingham Forest history in 1973 Allan Brown becomes Forest manager after leaving Bury.
Allan Brown became Nottingham Forest manager after leaving Bury, taking over at the City Ground in November 1973.
Brown arrived with Forest in the Second Division and looking for progress after several unsettled years. He had just helped set Bury on the road to promotion from the Fourth Division, and Forest hoped he could bring similar improvement to a club that had slipped well away from the top level.
His first season brought a respectable seventh-place finish, but the momentum did not last. Forest started the following campaign poorly, and Brown also angered supporters by selling Duncan McKenzie to Brian Clough’s Leeds United.
Brown was dismissed in January 1975 after a home defeat to Notts County. Three days later, Forest appointed Brian Clough, turning a struggling Second Division club towards one of the most dramatic managerial transformations in English football history.
