9–2 cup rout over Bolton
On this day in 1991 Forest beat Bolton Wanderers 5–2 to complete a 9–2 League Cup aggregate win.
Forest finished the job emphatically at Burnden Park by beating Bolton Wanderers 5–2 and completing a 9–2 aggregate win in the League Cup second round.
Brian Clough’s side had already won the first leg 4–0, but the return match still produced plenty of action. Teddy Sheringham and Roy Keane scored early for Forest before Bolton briefly fought back, only for Tommy Gaynor to make it 3–2 before half-time.
Keane scored again after the break, and Kingsley Black added a late fifth. The result turned a comfortable first-leg advantage into a full rout across the tie, with Forest’s attacking quality too much for lower-division Bolton over the two matches.
Forest moved on to face Bristol Rovers in the next round. The League Cup run would eventually take them all the way to Wembley, where they lost the 1992 final to Manchester United, but the Bolton tie showed how dangerous Clough’s side could be in cup football.
