First league derby defeat to Notts
On this day in 1892 Forest lose 3–0 to Notts County in the first league Nottingham derby.
The first league Nottingham derby gave Forest and Notts County’s old city rivalry a new competitive edge.
Forest lost 3–0 at Trent Bridge, so this was not a proud result on the pitch. But the fixture mattered because it moved the rivalry into league football, with points at stake and both clubs trying to establish themselves in the expanding national game.
The location adds to the historical weight. Trent Bridge places the match firmly in Forest’s pre-City Ground era, when the club’s identity and home story were still taking shape.
For Forest, the afternoon ended badly, but its place in club history is clear. The first league Nottingham derby went Notts County’s way, adding an early marker to one of English football’s oldest local rivalries.
