Liverpool title hopes ended
On this day in Nottingham Forest history in 1991 Forest beat Liverpool to end their title hopes.
Nottingham Forest ended Liverpool’s title challenge with a 2-1 win at the City Ground in the First Division.
Forest were building towards the FA Cup final, but this was far more than a warm-up fixture. Liverpool arrived still carrying title hopes, and the City Ground had the chance to watch Brian Clough’s side affect the top of the table as well as their own season.
Nigel Clough gave Forest the lead from the penalty spot, before Liverpool levelled and shifted the pressure back onto the home side. Ian Woan then scored the decisive Forest goal in the second half, giving the match the sharpness of a late-season contest where the consequences were immediately visible.
For Liverpool, defeat ended their title hopes as Arsenal went on to win the championship. For Forest, it was another reminder of the attacking rhythm they had found in the closing weeks of the campaign, and it gave supporters a strong home victory to enjoy before Wembley.
