Pearce penalty heartbreak at Italia 90
On this day in Nottingham Forest history in 1990 Stuart Pearce and Des Walker suffer World Cup semi-final heartbreak.
Stuart Pearce and Des Walker were at the centre of one of England’s most painful World Cup nights as West Germany won the Italia 90 semi-final on penalties.
The match finished 1-1 after extra time, with both Forest defenders starting for England. Walker’s pace and defending had been a major part of England’s run, while Pearce brought the same intensity and reliability that Forest supporters knew so well.
The shootout turned the night into a lasting national memory. Pearce’s penalty was saved by Bodo Illgner, and West Germany went on to win 4-3 on spot-kicks. It became one of the most replayed images of English football heartbreak.
For Forest fans, the match carried pride as well as pain. Two of the club’s players had started a World Cup semi-final, and Pearce’s miss, cruel as it was, became part of the story that later made his Euro 96 redemption so powerful.
