Victory over Palace fuels cup run
On this day in Nottingham Forest history in 1989 Forest beat Crystal Palace 5–0 in a League Cup third-round replay.
Nottingham Forest swept Crystal Palace aside at the City Ground with the kind of cup-night authority that had become familiar under Brian Clough.
The League Cup third-round replay was effectively settled before half-time. Steve Hodge struck after only two minutes, Nigel Clough added a second on 10 minutes, and Stuart Pearce made it 3–0 before the match had reached the midway point of the first half.
A Jeff Hopkins own goal shortly before the interval left Palace 4–0 down, and Hodge completed the scoring in the second half with his second goal of the night. Forest’s 5–0 win sent them into the next round against Everton and kept the defence of their League Cup status moving.
The result belongs to the wider story of the 1989–90 competition. Forest went on to win the League Cup again that season, beating Oldham Athletic in the final, and this replay was one of the early nights when the holders looked completely comfortable with the pressure.
