O’Hare double sinks Carlisle in Division 2
On this day in 1975 Forest beat Carlisle United 4–0 in League Division Two.
Nottingham Forest produced one of their clearest Division Two wins of the mid-1970s by beating Carlisle United 4–0 at the City Ground.
The match came during Brian Clough’s first full season in charge, with Forest still trying to build consistency after several years outside the top flight. Barry Butlin opened the scoring after 20 minutes, giving the home side the kind of early control they needed.
John O’Hare doubled the lead on the half-hour and scored again in the 70th minute, turning a solid advantage into a comfortable one. Terry Curran then completed the 4–0 win from the penalty spot four minutes later.
It was not a promotion-season landmark, but it was still a useful reminder of the attacking quality Clough was beginning to gather. Forest finished eighth that season, yet results like this helped steady the club before the sharper rise that followed under Clough and Peter Taylor.
