Pearce & Chapman beat Man Utd again
On this day in Nottingham Forest history in 1989 Forest beat Manchester United again days after knocking them out of the FA Cup.
Nottingham Forest beat Manchester United for the second time in nine days, following up their FA Cup quarter-final win with a 2-0 league victory at the City Ground.
Brian Clough’s side had already knocked United out of the cup at Old Trafford, and the quick league rematch gave Forest the chance to underline the point. Beating the same major opponent twice in such a short spell gave the result extra bite.
Stuart Pearce and Lee Chapman scored for Forest, giving the home crowd another memorable result against Manchester United. Pearce’s presence gave the win a familiar edge of authority, while Chapman added the attacking finish that helped seal the afternoon.
The 2-0 victory added to the feeling that Forest were a serious force in knockout and league football during that late-1980s period. United had been beaten in the cup, then beaten again in Nottingham.
