Parker knocks out Man Utd
On this day in 1989 Forest knock Manchester United out of the FA Cup.
Nottingham Forest knocked Manchester United out of the FA Cup with a 1-0 quarter-final win at Old Trafford.
A cup tie away at Manchester United carried obvious pressure, but Brian Clough’s side had the confidence and organisation to handle the occasion. Forest were already a dangerous cup team in the late 1980s, and this was another result that showed their ability to win difficult knockout matches.
Garry Parker scored the only goal, turning in from a Franz Carr cross to decide the tie. It was the kind of sharp, decisive moment that cup matches often depend on, and Forest made it count in one of English football’s most famous stadiums.
The 1-0 win sent Forest into the FA Cup semi-finals and gave supporters a memorable Old Trafford result. United were eliminated, while Forest moved on with another important victory in a strong cup era under Clough.
