Liverpool final draw sets replay
On this day in Nottingham Forest history in 1978 Forest draw with Liverpool in the League Cup final.
Nottingham Forest and Liverpool could not be separated in the League Cup final, drawing 0-0 after extra time at Wembley.
The occasion brought together two of the strongest sides in English football. Forest were chasing a major trophy in Brian Clough’s remarkable first full season in the top flight, while Liverpool carried the authority of reigning European champions. Wembley gave the match a huge stage, but the football stayed tight and tense.
Forest had to live with the pressure of a final that refused to open up. Players such as Peter Shilton, Kenny Burns and John McGovern were central to a side built on discipline as well as flair, and that resilience kept Liverpool out across 120 minutes.
The draw set up the replay at Old Trafford four days later. Forest won that second match 1-0, lifting the League Cup and taking the first trophy of the Clough era’s astonishing run.
