NOTTINGHAM FOREST HISTORY
Clough quick double beats Derby
On this day in Nottingham Forest history in 1988 Forest beat Derby at the City Ground.
Nottingham Forest claimed East Midlands derby bragging rights with a 2-1 win over Derby County at the City Ground.
Derby matches carry their own pressure, and a home win in the rivalry always lands with extra satisfaction. Forest had to do more than simply control the occasion; they needed the goals to make the derby advantage count.
Nigel Clough scored twice in quick succession, striking in the 16th and 17th minutes to give Forest control of the derby. Derby later pulled one back through a Colin Foster own goal, but Clough’s rapid double remained the defining story of the match.
The 2-1 win gave Forest the points and the local pride. For supporters, the result had the ingredients that make derby days linger: a home crowd, a narrow scoreline, a named hero, and Derby leaving the City Ground beaten.
