NOTTINGHAM FOREST HISTORY
Saints FA Cup draw starts saga
On this day in Nottingham Forest history in 1963 Forest draw with Southampton in the FA Cup quarter-final.
Nottingham Forest’s FA Cup quarter-final against Southampton began with a 1-1 draw at the City Ground.
A home draw in the sixth round left the tie unresolved and turned the contest into a longer test than Forest would have wanted. Southampton had avoided defeat in Nottingham, so Forest still had work to do before any semi-final place could be settled.
Bob McKinlay scored for Forest, while Terry Paine replied for Southampton. The 1-1 scoreline gave the tie an awkward shape: Forest had not lost the chance, but they had also missed the opportunity to finish the job at home.
The quarter-final eventually went to two replays. Forest drew the first replay 3-3, then lost the second replay 5-0 to Southampton, ending the cup run in a far harsher way than the opening draw had suggested.
