Birtles & Carr secure Man City victory
On this day in Nottingham Forest history in 1986 Forest beat Manchester City 2–0 at the City Ground.
Forest kept their First Division momentum moving with a 2–0 home win over Manchester City at the City Ground.
City arrived bottom of the table but made Forest work for the points. The match was still goalless at half-time before Garry Birtles struck in the 47th minute, his finish giving Brian Clough’s side the control they had been looking for.
Franz Carr settled the afternoon late on, scoring in the 86th minute to turn a narrow lead into a secure win. With Birtles leading the line and Carr adding the second, Forest had enough quality to break down a City side still chasing their first away win of the season.
The result kept Forest near the top end of the First Division and left City under pressure in a difficult campaign. For supporters at the City Ground, it was a patient rather than explosive win, but one that did its job cleanly.
