Happy birthday Tony Woodcock! (born 1955)
On this day in Nottingham Forest history in 1955 European Cup hero Tony Woodcock is born.
Tony Woodcock’s Forest story began close to home, with the future European Cup winner born in Eastwood before coming through the club’s youth system.
Woodcock was not just a local name who briefly passed through. After loan spells at Lincoln City and Doncaster Rovers helped harden him for senior football, he became part of Brian Clough’s rapidly rising side and helped win promotion to the First Division.
His best Forest years arrived at extraordinary speed. Woodcock helped win the 1977-78 league title and League Cup, then started the 1979 European Cup final against Malmö as Trevor Francis scored the decisive goal in Munich.
He later moved to 1 FC Köln and also played for Arsenal, while remaining an England international with a strong reputation in both English and German football. For Forest supporters, his birthday belongs to the story of a local forward who became part of the club’s greatest rise.
