Hodge double punishes Wolves
On this day in 1983 Forest beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 5–0 as Steve Hodge scores twice.
Nottingham Forest overwhelmed Wolverhampton Wanderers 5–0 at the City Ground in a First Division match that showed the attacking range of Brian Clough’s side.
Garry Birtles opened the scoring, and Peter Davenport made it 2–0 from the penalty spot. Colin Walsh added Forest’s third before Steve Hodge took over the final stage of the afternoon.
Hodge scored twice in quick succession, turning a comfortable win into a rout. For a midfielder, his goal return that season was an important part of Forest’s threat, and this double belonged to a campaign in which he became a regular scorer as well as a central presence.
The result left Wolves bottom and still winless after 12 league matches, while Forest continued a season that would end with a third-place finish and a UEFA Cup semi-final run. The 5–0 scoreline remains one of the cleaner examples of that side’s ability to punish struggling opponents.
