Nottingham Forest completed a professional UEFA Cup first-round win by beating FC Vorwärts Frankfurt 1-0 away from home.

Brian Clough’s side had already built a 2-0 advantage at the City Ground in the first leg, through goals from Ian Wallace and Steve Hodge. In East Germany, Forest only needed to avoid a damaging defeat to finish the job.

Ian Bowyer scored the only goal of the second leg, giving Forest another win and removing any late uncertainty from the contest. The result completed a 3-0 aggregate victory and took Forest safely into the next round.

The wider run became one of the notable European campaigns of the post-European Cup era. Forest went on to reach the UEFA Cup semi-finals in 1983-84, where Anderlecht eventually edged the tie 3-2 on aggregate.
