Semi final place secured at Kilmarnock
On this day in Nottingham Forest history in 1976 Forest draw at Kilmarnock to reach the Anglo-Scottish Cup semi-finals.
Nottingham Forest reached the Anglo-Scottish Cup semi-finals after a 2-2 draw away to Kilmarnock secured a 4-3 aggregate win.
Forest had taken a 2-1 lead from the first leg at the City Ground, so the return match at Rugby Park still carried danger. Kilmarnock pushed the tie into extra time, but Forest had Terry Curran to thank for both goals, scoring in the 64th minute and again in extra time.
The draw was enough to carry Brian Clough and Peter Taylor’s side through. It also added another important cup night to a season that was beginning to gather momentum across more than one competition.
Forest went on to beat Ayr United in the semi-finals and then defeated Orient 5-1 on aggregate in the final. That made the Anglo-Scottish Cup the first trophy of the Clough and Taylor era at Forest, giving this Kilmarnock tie a clear place in the story of what followed.
