Anderson strikes before European final
On this day in 1980 Viv Anderson scores as Forest beat Everton before the European final.
Viv Anderson gave Nottingham Forest a late 1-0 win over Everton at the City Ground in the final weeks before the European Cup final.
The league campaign no longer carried the same historic charge as the title-winning season, but Forest were still operating at the sharp end of English and European football. With the Hamburg final approaching, every match carried the question of form, rhythm and readiness.
Everton made Forest work for the result. The game stayed goalless deep into the closing stages before Anderson scored late on, giving Brian Clough’s side the win and sending the crowd home with a familiar feeling: Forest had again found a way to decide a tight match.
The victory did not define the season on its own, but it fitted the mood of a team preparing for another European night. Supporters could look toward Madrid knowing Forest still had the competitive edge that had taken them so far.
