Win in Romania seals Euro progress
On this day in 1979 Forest win 2–1 at Argeș Pitești to complete a 4–1 European Cup aggregate victory.
Forest handled a difficult European away night with authority, beating Argeș Pitești 2–1 in Romania to complete a 4–1 aggregate win in the European Cup.
Brian Clough’s side had already won the first leg 2–0 at the City Ground, but they removed any real danger from the return match quickly. Ian Bowyer scored with a left-footed finish after Larry Lloyd’s pass, and Garry Birtles added a right-footed second from Tony Woodcock’s pass before half-time.
Argeș pulled one back through Ilie Bărbulescu from the penalty spot after the break, but Forest’s progress was already secure. The defending European champions had avoided a nervy night and moved through another round with the professionalism that marked their continental campaigns.
The aggregate win took Forest into the quarter-finals of the competition they would go on to retain. It was another step in the remarkable European story that had begun only a year earlier.
