Victory at Everton aids cup defence
On this day in 1978 Forest beat Everton 3–2 in a League Cup fourth-round thriller at Goodison Park.
Forest came through a demanding League Cup tie at Goodison Park, beating Everton 3–2 in the fourth round during the defence of their trophy.
The night started awkwardly when Kenny Burns was credited with an own goal from a Dave Thomas corner, but Forest responded strongly. Larry Lloyd headed them level from Burns’s assist, Viv Anderson put them ahead with a long-range strike, and Tony Woodcock made it 3–1 from a John Robertson corner.
Bob Latchford’s late goal gave Everton hope, but Forest held on. It was the kind of cup win that showed the resilience and range of Brian Clough’s side, with defenders and attackers both shaping the scoring.
The victory kept Forest on course in a competition they had won the previous season. They would go on to retain the League Cup, making this Goodison Park win a lively early chapter in another successful cup run.
