Woodcock & Robertson extend run
On this day in 1978 Forest beat Aston Villa 2-1 at Villa Park during their record unbeaten league run.
Nottingham Forest extended their remarkable unbeaten league run with a 2-1 win away to Aston Villa at Villa Park.
Villa went ahead through a Tommy Craig penalty, but Forest responded after half-time. Tony Woodcock brought Brian Clough’s side level, and John Robertson then scored from the penalty spot to complete the turnaround.
The win belonged to the long unbeaten sequence that had started in the previous season and carried Forest through their period as champions of England. This was not simply a strong away result; it was another example of a side that had learned how to recover from setbacks and keep collecting points.
Forest’s unbeaten league run eventually reached 42 matches, a Football League record that stood for decades. The victory at Villa Park was one of the results that helped build that number, with Woodcock and Robertson again central to the story.
