2-0 win over Newcastle in title run
On this day in 1978 Forest beat Newcastle during their title-winning season.
Nottingham Forest kept their title run moving with a 2-0 First Division win over Newcastle United at the City Ground.
By late March, every result carried weight. Brian Clough’s side had turned promotion momentum into a serious championship push, and home matches still had to be handled with discipline rather than assumption.
John Robertson scored from the penalty spot and Viv Anderson added a tap-in, giving Forest the goals they needed. Robertson’s reliability from the spot and Anderson’s contribution from full-back reflected the range of players who kept appearing in important moments during the title season.
The win over Newcastle added another controlled step towards the league title. Forest were not relying only on spectacular performances. They were gathering results with a calmness that made the extraordinary campaign feel increasingly real.
