Massive win over Leeds seals Wembley
On this day in 1978 Forest beat Leeds United 7–3 on aggregate to reach the League Cup final.
Nottingham Forest reached the League Cup final by beating Leeds United 4–2 at the City Ground, completing a 7–3 aggregate victory in the semi-final.
Forest already led 3–1 from the first leg at Elland Road, but the return match still needed finishing properly. Peter Withe scored after 18 minutes, Ian Bowyer added another after the break, and Martin O’Neill and Tony Woodcock struck in quick succession to keep Forest firmly in control.
The tie underlined the force of Brian Clough’s side during a season when Forest were chasing trophies on more than one front. Leeds had been one of English football’s major powers, but Forest handled the semi-final with the confidence of a team growing into something special.
The win sent Forest to Wembley, where they would face Liverpool in the final. After a goalless draw at Wembley, Forest won the replay 1–0 at Old Trafford to lift the League Cup for the first time.
