McGovern goal boosts title chase
On this day in 1978 Forest beat Wolves 2–0 during the First Division title-winning season.
Forest strengthened their First Division title challenge with a controlled 2–0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers at the City Ground.
Brian Clough’s side were already deep into a remarkable league campaign, but matches like this helped turn promise into something more serious. Forest beat Wolves with goals from Tony Woodcock and John McGovern, keeping momentum in a season built on discipline, confidence and the ability to handle pressure.
Woodcock scored from close range after a Martin O’Neill header, before McGovern added the second with a left-footed finish from a John Robertson cross. The goals turned a difficult league fixture into another statement that the newly promoted side belonged at the very top of English football.
The win continued the good run of form. Forest did not need a spectacular scoreline every week; they needed results that kept belief growing. This was one of those afternoons when the City Ground saw the championship push move another step forward.
