Victory over Man City boosts title run
On this day in Nottingham Forest history in 1977 Forest beat Manchester City during the club’s First Division title-winning season.
Forest’s title-winning season gained another important push with a 2–1 home win over Manchester City at the City Ground.
Manchester City struck first through Brian Kidd, but Forest responded through Tony Woodcock, who finished from close range after John Robertson’s effort had opened the chance. Peter Withe then scored the decisive goal late on, his deflected shot coming from another Robertson pass.
The win showed several qualities that defined Brian Clough’s side. Forest had to recover from going behind, stay patient against strong opposition, and turn pressure into a result. Woodcock and Withe gave the attack the goals, while Robertson’s involvement in both Forest finishes underlined his influence.
This was still early in the 1977–78 league campaign, but every result helped build the sense that the promoted side were capable of something far beyond consolidation.
Forest went on to win the First Division title, making matches like this feel part of the climb: difficult, competitive, and quietly decisive in a season that became extraordinary.
