FA Cup victory over Notts Swifts
On this day in 1887 Forest beat Notts Swifts in the FA Cup first round.
Forest’s FA Cup campaign began with a local victory over Notts Swifts at the Gregory Ground.
The 2–1 first-round win came in a very different football world, long before modern league structures and national coverage gave every result a familiar shape. George Tutin scored for Forest in the first half, and Salathiel Norman later got the decisive goal in extra time.
The opponent made the occasion feel rooted in Nottingham football. Notts Swifts were part of the local game’s early competitive landscape, and matches like this helped shape rivalries and identities before the Football League became the centre of the sport.
For Forest, the value of the day was simple and practical: they won an FA Cup tie and advanced. There was no need for a grand scoreline or later mythology. The competition itself was already becoming the stage on which ambitious clubs wanted to be seen.
The 2–1 win stands as an early cup step from the club’s formative years, with local opposition beaten and progress secured.
