Gemmill debut begins title season

On this day in 1977 Archie Gemmill makes his Forest league debut against Norwich City.

Senior debut

Archie Gemmill made his Nottingham Forest league debut in a 1-1 home draw against Norwich City, only weeks after crossing the East Midlands divide from Derby County.

Forest’s goal came from Kenny Burns in the 73rd minute, before Martin Peters equalised for Norwich five minutes later. The draw was not a headline result, but Gemmill’s arrival mattered.

He was already a proven Brian Clough midfielder: sharp, experienced, competitive and comfortable in a team built on discipline as much as flair. Forest were newly promoted, but Gemmill gave the midfield another title-winning voice at exactly the right moment.

That first season became extraordinary. Gemmill helped Forest win the 1977-78 First Division title, one of the great shocks of English football, as Clough and Peter Taylor turned a promoted side into champions.

He stayed part of the story the following season too. Gemmill started the 1979 League Cup final as Forest beat Southampton 3-2 at Wembley, adding another major honour to the club’s golden run.

His Forest career also carried a painful edge: he missed out on the 1979 European Cup final before leaving for Birmingham City later that year. Even so, his debut against Norwich marked the start of a short but important Forest spell in the heart of the Clough-Taylor era.
