First match against Derby
On this day in 1892 Forest beat Derby County in the first competitive meeting between the clubs.
Nottingham Forest beat Derby County 3-2 at the Racecourse Ground in the first competitive meeting between the clubs.
It was a five-goal away win in Football League Division One, and it gave Forest the opening word in a fixture that would grow into one of the club’s fiercest local rivalries.
This was not yet the modern derby supporters know today. There was no Brian Clough Trophy, no long history of league battles and no generations of shared rivalry behind it. That all came later. But the first competitive chapter already had the essential ingredients: Forest, Derby, league points and local pride.
The fixture would go on to carry decades of tension, bragging rights and football history. For Forest fans, the starting point is simple and satisfying: the first competitive meeting with Derby ended in a 3-2 Forest win away from home.
