Withe double over Derby in title season
On this day in 1977 Forest beat Derby County 3–0 at the City Ground during their title-winning First Division season.
Nottingham Forest made an early statement in their title-winning season by beating Derby County 3-0 at the City Ground.
Brian Clough’s side were newly promoted, but this was already a team playing with purpose and edge. Against the club Clough had previously led to the league title, Forest produced a derby win that carried more than local bragging rights.
Peter Withe scored twice and John Robertson also found the net, giving Forest a clear and satisfying victory in the First Division. Withe’s first was listed as a left-footed finish after a Larry Lloyd header, before he added another from a Robertson pass and Robertson later completed the scoring.
As the season unfolded, the win came to sit inside one of the most extraordinary campaigns in English football history. Forest went on to become champions of England, and the August derby victory became part of the early momentum behind that run.
