Larry Lloyd debut precedes Euro glory
On this day in 1976 Larry Lloyd makes his Forest league debut away to Hull City.
Larry Lloyd made his Nottingham Forest league debut in a 1-0 defeat away to Hull City, a low-key beginning to one of the most important defensive careers in the club’s history.
The result gave no hint of what was coming. Forest were still outside the top flight, and Brian Clough’s team was being assembled piece by piece rather than announced in one grand moment.
Lloyd’s arrival brought authority, strength and experience to the centre of defence. He had already won major honours with Liverpool, and at Forest he became part of a back line that gave the side its hard edge.
That first league appearance came before the great rush of success. Within two seasons, Forest had been promoted, won the First Division title and lifted the League Cup. Lloyd then played his part in the European Cup triumphs that followed.
The Hull defeat was not a famous result, but the debut was significant. Forest had added a defender who would help turn Clough’s team from ambitious challengers into champions.
