5-1 rout boosts promotion season
On this day in 1976 Forest beat Carlisle United 5-1 during Brian Clough’s promotion-building season.
Nottingham Forest overwhelmed Carlisle United 5-1 at the City Ground in a result that showed the attacking strength beginning to emerge under Brian Clough and Peter Taylor.
Carlisle struck first through Mike Barry, but Forest responded with authority. John O’Hare brought them level, Ian Bowyer scored twice in the second half, Colin Barrett added another, and Peter Withe marked his first-team debut with the final goal.
Withe’s debut gave the afternoon an extra edge. He had only recently arrived, but immediately made an impact by scoring Forest’s fifth goal and helping turn an awkward start into a heavy home win.
The match belonged to a promotion-building 1976-77 season. Forest finished third in the Second Division, went up to the First Division, and also won the Anglo-Scottish Cup, turning this period into the launch point for the club’s extraordinary rise.
