Away goals exit to Zürich
On this day in Nottingham Forest history in 1967 Forest exit the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup on away goals against FC Zürich.
Nottingham Forest’s Inter-Cities Fairs Cup dreams ended at Stadion Letzigrund, where FC Zürich won the second leg 1–0 and went through on away goals.
Forest had taken a 2–1 lead from the first leg at the City Ground, but Zürich’s goal in Switzerland changed the whole tie. Christian Winiger scored the only goal of the night, with Ernst Meyer involved in the move, leaving the aggregate score level at 2–2.
That was enough for Zürich - their goal in Nottingham ultimately decided the tie, with Forest eliminated on away goals despite matching the Swiss side over the two legs.
It was a frustrating European exit for Johnny Carey’s side: not a collapse, not a heavy defeat, but a narrow two-legged loss decided by one goal scored away from home.
