FA Cup semi win over Aston Villa
On this day in Nottingham Forest history in 1959 Forest beat Aston Villa to reach the FA Cup final.
Nottingham Forest reached the FA Cup final by beating Aston Villa 1-0 in the semi-final at Hillsborough.
A semi-final at a neutral ground carried huge pressure. Forest were one win from Wembley and one win from the chance to claim the club’s second FA Cup. Against Aston Villa, they found the result they needed in a match where the margin was narrow but the consequence was enormous.
Johnny Quigley scored the only goal, giving Forest the victory that carried them back to Wembley. The 1-0 win put Forest into the final and gave supporters a day to remember long before the trophy itself was secured.
The win mattered because it opened the door to one of the club’s great Wembley occasions. Forest went on to beat Luton Town 2-1 in the final, completing the cup run and lifting the FA Cup for the second time.
